How an interesting tale became an obsession...

v_md_clr.gif

My dad contributed to my curiosity and my obsession with the genealogy of our family with the claim that his side of the family came and settled in England along with the Normans and William and Mary.  Another story was that our roots were in Friesland which was on the other side of the English Channel between Germany and Holland and that the family emigrated to the south of England sometime in the 1400's.  Which of these was right?

I was never good at history in school but when my mother told me the story of one of her grandfathers (she wasn't sure how far back) was the Bailiff for the Duke of Wellington who defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, I was intrigued.  Could this be just someone's tale that has been embellished as it was passed down the years or was it indeed fact?
